Skydiving Competitive skydiving is a thrilling and dynamic sport with various disciplines that showcase the skills and creativity of skydivers. Here are some of the most popular competitive skydiving disciplines: Drone Racing Drone racing is a high-tech, adrenaline-fueled sport where pilots control custom-built First-Person View (FPV) drones at speeds exceeding 100 mph (160 km/h) through obstacle courses. Pilots wear goggles that stream live video from the drone’s camera, creating an immersive, real-life “video game” experience. Paramotoring Paramotoring (or powered paragliding, PPG ) is an ultra-lightweight form of aviation where a pilot flies a motorized paraglider—a small propeller-driven engine (paramotor) attached to a paraglider wing. It combines the simplicity of paragliding with the freedom of self-powered flight, allowing takeoffs from flat ground without needing a hill or tow. Hang Gliding Hang gliding is an air sport where a pilot flies a lightweight, non-motorized glider (a “hang glider”) by using wind currents and body weight shifts for control. Unlike paragliding (which uses a soft wing), hang gliders have a rigid aluminum or composite frame with a fabric wing, offering higher speeds and better performance in strong winds. Wing Suit Flying Wingsuit flying (or wingsuiting ) is an extreme air sport where participants wear a specialized jumpsuit with fabric wings between the arms and legs, allowing them to glide through the air like a flying squirrel or bird. Pilots leap from cliffs, planes, or helicopters, reaching speeds of 100–200 mph (160–320 km/h) while controlling their flight path before deploying a parachute for landing. Hot Air Ballooning Hot air ballooning is the oldest form of human flight, where a large balloon filled with heated air carries a basket (gondola) with passengers and a pilot. Unlike gliders or airplanes, balloons have no engines—they ascend, descend, and drift with the wind, offering a serene and scenic flight experience. Air Racing Air racing is a high-speed motorsport where pilots compete in aircraft over a fixed course, combining speed, precision, and aerobatic skill. Unlike traditional motorsports, air racing involves three-dimensional movement, making it one of the most extreme and visually spectacular forms of racing. Paragliding Paragliding is a recreational and competitive adventure sport where a pilot flies a lightweight, free-flying glider aircraft called a paraglider. Unlike parachutes (which are primarily for slowing descent), paragliders are designed for extended flight using rising air currents. Gliding Gliding (or sailplane flying ) is a motorless air sport where pilots fly streamlined, high-performance gliders (sailplanes) using natural rising air currents—thermals, ridge lift, or wave lift —to stay airborne for hours and cover vast distances. Unlike paragliding or hang gliding, gliders have rigid wings and enclosed cockpits, enabling faster, longer, and more precise flights. Aerobatics Aerobatics is the extreme sport of performing precision maneuvers—rolls, loops, spins, and gravity-defying tricks—in an aircraft (gliders, propeller planes, or jets). Pilots push the limits of physics and human endurance, combining artistry, athleticism, and technical skill to execute choreographed routines or freestyle flights. Base Jumping BASE jumping is an extreme sport where participants leap from fixed objects—B uildings, A ntennas, S pans (bridges), or E arth (cliffs)—using a parachute to break their fall. Unlike skydiving (which involves jumping from planes), BASE jumps happen at much lower altitudes (often 200–1,500 ft/60–450 m ), leaving minimal time for parachute deployment and requiring split-second precision. Kite Flying / Kite Boarding Kite Flying is a recreational activity where a lightweight kite is tethered to a string and flown using wind currents. It ranges from simple single-line kites to complex stunt kites.
